Worldwide there are 387 million people living with diabetes. 77% of people with diabetes live in low- and middle- income countries. Every 7 seconds one person dies from diabetes. 4.9 million people died from diabetes in 2014. 1 out of 9 health care dollars is spent on diabetes. In 2014 diabetes expenditure reached US $612 billion. Diabetes has become a very big business and is not likely to disappear any time soon. By 2035, over 205 million more people worldwide are expected to have diabetes.
