Natural Remedies for Diabetes by Julia Hanf

Natural remedies for diabetes are effective in helping keep blood sugar levels under control. Diabetes is a condition in which a person has too much sugar in his blood because their pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin to transport sugar, also known as glucose, to the cells, where it is stored and used for energy.

The excess sugar in the blood can cause a variety of health problems, if it’s not properly treated. The most common symptoms of diabetes include frequent thirst or urination, sores that take a long time to heal, constant thirst and hunger, and blurred vision. Other symptoms might include frequent infections, dry skin, and unexplained weight loss.

Type 1 diabetes happens when the pancreas produces very little if any insulin. Type 1 diabetes occurs mostly among children and teens. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, affecting 95% of all those with this disease. With Type 2 diabetes the body starts to resist the effects of insulin, or there is simply not enough insulin in the body for a person to have a healthy blood sugar level. Type 2 diabetes takes place most often in adults.

Magnesium – People who have diabetes, or who are at risk for this disease, should eat foods that are rich in magnesium or take a daily vitamin supplement. Magnesium is a mineral that is needed by the body in order to stay healthy. According to the National Institutes of Health, magnesium helps regulate the production and function of insulin in the body, and helps the body control blood sugar levels. People who include magnesium in their daily diet have been found to be less likely to develop diabetes.

Daily recommended dosages for women include around 300 mg of magnesium daily. The recommended daily allowance of magnesium for men is 400mg. Magnesium can be found in green leafy vegetables, such as spinach; as well as in nuts like almonds and cashews. It is also found in whole grains and oats.

Apple Cider Vinegar – Apple cider vinegar is also an effective natural diabetes treatment. A number of studies have shown that apple cider, and other types of vinegar can actually reduce the blood sugar levels of people who have type 2 diabetes. To achieve the best results a person should take two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar at bed time.

Researchers at the University of Arizona studied the effects of apple cider on people who have type 2 diabetes. It was found that apple cider vinegar can reduce a person’s blood sugar levels by as much as 6 percent in about two days. Furthermore it was found that if people take a small amount of apple cider vinegar with their meals, they can reduce the spike in blood sugar that often occurs after a person eats.

Cinnamon as a Natural Diabetes Treatment – Research has shown that cinnamon can also be used as a natural diabetes treatment. In a study done at the US Department of Agriculture’s Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center in 2006, researchers found that cinnamon acts as an anti-inflammatory and has a similar effect on the body as insulin. To get results all it takes is a half of a teaspoon of cinnamon each day.
