Type 2 Diabetes – Do Existing Diabetic Treatments Need Updating? By Beverleigh H Piepers

Resveratrol, the anti-oxidant that naturally occurs in red grapes, has been hailed as a potential new treatment that could be given alongside regular conventional treatment for Type 2 diabetes.

These findings came from a study that was carried out by the University of Medical Sciences in Iran, where the focus was to see if resveratrol was effective in lowering blood sugar levels alongside standard anti-diabetic treatment. The study recruited 66 people with Type 2 diabetes, with:

  • one group receiving 1 g a day of resveratrol for 45 days, and
  • the other group receiving a placebo pill for 45 days.

Dr. Ali Movahed, the author of the study, is said to have made the following comments about the findings of his teams study to NutraIngredients.com…

“The central findings of the study was that supplementation of resveratrol (along with standard anti-diabetic medication) for a short-term is beneficial in lowering blood glucose in patients with Type 2 diabetes.”

He also went on to say that if future trials find there are more positive outcomes for resveratrol confirming the results of this trial, then resveratrol could become an adjunct in diabetic medicine. He also feels that newer treatments are needed to complement and enhance the efficacy of the existing diabetic treatment regime.

This study also outlined that the Islamic Republic of Iran is now one of the countries with the highest prevalence of Type 2 diabetes, and that by 2030 developing countries will make up 77.6% of those affected globally.

So, do I think adding a small amount of fresh, organic grapes could be a good thing to add to a diabetics diet? Yes – it certainly will do no harm. As with all diabetic eating plans, ensure you work out what works for you as an individual and do not overdo eating any one fruit due to the naturally occurring fruit sugars fruit contains and which may aggravate your personal blood sugar levels.

Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant found in cacao, red grapes, berries, and red wine. It is an amazing extract that has been the subject of hundreds of scientific papers. But do I think you should be looking to obtain resveratrol from red wine? Well, grapes in wine are completely different to fresh grapes, namely due to the alcohol they contain which is known to cause problems in diabetics. So although they may contain some resveratrol, the potential damage the alcohol could cause to your blood sugar and, by this I mean, it could go onto cause a hypo – is just not worth it.
